Distinguishing the neural correlates of episodic memory encoding and semantic memory retrieval.

چکیده
Episodic memory and semantic memory interact very closely. In particular, episodic memory encoding (EE) tends to elicit semantic memory retrieval (SR), and vice versa. Thus, similar activations for EE and SR in functional neuroimaging studies may reflect shared memory processes, or they may reflect the fact that EE and SR are usually confounded. To address this issue, we used a factorial functional magnetic resonance imaging approach to disentangle the neural correlates of EE and SR. Within the left temporal lobe, the hippocampus was associated with successful EE, whereas a posterior lateral region was associated with successful SR. Within the left inferior prefrontal cortex, a posterior region was involved in SR, a mid region was involved in both SR and EE, and an anterior region was involved in EE, but only when SR was also high. Thus, the neural correlates of EE and SR are dissociable but interact in specific brain regions.

Patients with epilepsy are at the risk of cognitive disorders and abnormalities of behavior. The purpose of this study is to compare the episodic memory and semantic memory in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and healthy control subjects. This is a causal – comparative study. The study population was patients with epilepsy Iranian epilepsy society in Tehran, that, among 20 patients wi...
متن کامل"Pray or Prey?" dissociation of semantic memory retrieval from episodic memory processes using positron emission tomography and a novel homophone task.
One problem in studying the neural basis of semantic memory using functional neuroimaging is that it is often difficult to disentangle activation associated with semantic memory retrieval from that associated with episodic memory encoding and retrieval. To address this issue, a novel homophone task was used in which subjects were PET scanned whilst learning a series of real words (e.g., prey). ...
متن کاملCommon and Unique Neural Activations in Autobiographical, Episodic, and Semantic Retrieval
This study sought to explore the neural correlates that underlie autobiographical, episodic, and semantic memory. Autobiographical memory was defined as the conscious recollection of personally relevant events, episodic memory as the recall of stimuli presented in the laboratory, and semantic memory as the retrieval of factual information and general knowledge about the world. Our objective was...
متن کاملNeural activity reveals interactions between episodic and semantic memory systems during retrieval
The distinction between memory for events and memory for facts rests on a range of findings indicating that different memory systems respectively subserve episodic and semantic memory functions. Whereas general knowledge clearly affects memory for events, the respective roles of encoding and retrieval processes in this interaction remain unclear. Using intracranial electroencephalography and mu...
متن کاملEncoding processes during retrieval tasks.
Episodic memory encoding is pervasive across many kinds of task and often arises as a secondary processing effect in tasks that do not require intentional memorization. To illustrate the pervasive nature of information processing that leads to episodic encoding, a form of incidental encoding was explored based on the "Testing" phenomenon: The incidental-encoding task was an episodic memory retr...
